WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE GRANT ENDS? Why Sustainable Research Funding Matters

When people think about philanthropy, they often think about the moment a grant is awarded. The announcement is made. The funding is secured. Photos are taken. Everyone celebrates. Then what?
That question doesn't get nearly enough attention.
In biomedical research, a grant is rarely the finish line. More often, it's the starting point. Discoveries don't happen on a predictable schedule, and meaningful scientific progress almost never fits neatly into a two- or three-year funding cycle. Some of the most promising research I've supported has required years of persistence before producing results that could move the field forward.
That is why I've come to believe that one of the biggest challenges in science today isn't simply funding research. It's creating sustainable research funding that allows good ideas to continue long enough to prove themselves.

SCIENCE DOESN'T WORK ON A DEADLINE
Research is an exercise in patience. Experiments fail. New questions emerge. Data leads researchers in unexpected directions. Sometimes a project appears to stall before a breakthrough changes everything.
That's the reality of discovery.
Unfortunately, funding doesn't always operate with the same mindset. Researchers often spend an enormous amount of time applying for the next grant before the current one ends. Instead of focusing entirely on the science, they're forced to focus on securing the resources needed to keep the work alive.
That uncertainty can interrupt momentum at exactly the wrong time. It can also discourage talented young investigators who are trying to establish themselves in highly competitive fields.
THE BEST INVESTMENT IS CONTINUITY
One reason the Jayne Koskinas Ted Giovanis Foundation created the JKTG Foundation Scholars Program was to help address that challenge.
The program supports promising early-career scientists working across critical areas of biomedical research at Johns Hopkins Medicine. More importantly, it gives them the opportunity to build momentum during one of the most important stages of their careers.
Supporting young investigators isn't simply about today's project. It's about helping them become tomorrow's scientific leaders.
Every accomplished researcher was once someone with a promising idea who needed an opportunity to pursue it. By investing early, we increase the likelihood that important discoveries continue long after the initial funding period has ended.

SUCCESS SHOULD CREATE MORE OPPORTUNITY
One of the things I've learned in both business and racing is that success creates options.
A strong season gives a racing team more opportunities to improve the car. A successful business reinvests profits into future growth.
Research should work the same way. When an investigator produces promising results, our first thought shouldn't be, "The grant is over." It should be, "How do we help this continue?"
Some of the most important advances in medicine have been built over many years by researchers who were given the time and resources to follow the evidence wherever it led.
Stopping that work simply because a funding cycle has ended makes very little sense.
PHILANTHROPY SHOULD BUILD CAPACITY
I've never viewed philanthropy as simply writing checks. The goal is to strengthen the system.
That means supporting people, creating opportunities, encouraging collaboration, and helping researchers build careers that can continue making an impact for decades.
A grant may fund a project. An investment in a scientist can influence an entire field.
That's an important distinction.
When philanthropy focuses only on short-term outcomes, it risks overlooking the long-term value of developing talented researchers who will spend their careers solving problems we haven't even identified yet.
THE FUTURE DEPENDS ON WHAT WE BUILD TODAY
Biomedical research has never moved faster than it is moving today.
Artificial intelligence is changing how researchers analyze data. Precision medicine is transforming cancer treatment. Cell biology continues to reveal new insights into diseases that once seemed impossible to understand.
Those advances don't happen by accident. They happen because scientists have the resources, mentorship, and stability to keep asking difficult questions.
That is why sustainable research funding matters. Not because every project succeeds. But because every breakthrough depends on someone having the opportunity to keep going.
FINAL THOUGHT
The end of a grant should never mean the end of a good idea. If we want medical innovation to continue improving lives, we have to think beyond individual funding cycles and start thinking about scientific careers, long-term partnerships, and lasting momentum.
That has always been my philosophy through the JKTG Foundation.
Support exceptional people.
Give them the opportunity to do meaningful work.
Then help ensure that when the grant ends, the research doesn't.
